Plymouth is a city in the south of England, situated between the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west. The city is famous for being the place that in 1620 the Pilgrims departed for the New World and established Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what is today the United States of America.
Throughout its history Plymouth was an important naval and commercial hub. Because of its naval importance the city was targeted during World War II, known as the Plymouth Blitz. Today the city is home to over 260.000 people, making it one of the most populous areas in the United Kingdom and the second-largest city in the South West, after Bristol. Plymouth’s economy is still strongly focused on shipbuilding and seafaring, but since the 1990s it has tended toward a service-based economy.
